When Peace Feels Out of Reach — Leaning on God in Restless Seasons
There are days when peace feels more like a distant dream than a present reality. Maybe your mind is racing with everything you need to do, or maybe your heart feels heavy with things you can’t control. You pray, you read your Bible, but instead of calm, you still feel restless. If that’s you, you’re not alone.
I’ve been there too—asking God, “Why do I still feel this way?” Sometimes we expect peace to arrive the moment we pray, but often peace is something we learn to hold onto as we walk with Him.
The Peace Jesus Promised
In John 14:27, Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
That’s powerful, because Jesus isn’t promising peace that depends on everything going right. He’s promising a peace that holds steady even when life doesn’t. The world’s version of peace says, “When things are calm, then you’ll feel better.” But His peace says, “Even in the storm, I am with you.”
Why Peace Slips Away
Peace often slips away when:
-
We try to fix everything ourselves.
-
We get lost in what-ifs and worst-case scenarios.
-
We carry tomorrow’s worries when God told us to focus on today (Matthew 6:34).
When our focus drifts from God to our circumstances, it’s no surprise that restlessness moves in.
How to Lean Into God’s Peace
Here are a few simple but powerful ways I’ve found to lean on Him when peace feels out of reach:
-
Pause and Pray Honestly – Not fancy prayers, just real ones. Tell Him exactly what’s weighing on you. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us to bring everything to God in prayer, and His peace will guard our hearts and minds.
-
Hold onto One Verse – Sometimes reading chapter after chapter can feel overwhelming. Instead, grab one verse—maybe Psalm 46:10 (“Be still, and know that I am God”)—and repeat it to yourself throughout the day.
-
Release What You Can’t Control – Write down your worries, and then physically hand the paper to God in prayer. It’s a small act, but it reminds your heart that He’s in charge.
-
Worship in the Waiting – Put on a worship song and let the words wash over your heart. Music has a way of quieting what words can’t always fix.
A Final Word of Hope
Friend, peace is not about everything falling into place—it’s about knowing Who holds you when nothing makes sense. Even when your heart feels restless, God’s promise still stands: His peace is available, steady, and real.
So the next time peace feels far away, remember: you don’t have to chase it. You just have to rest in the One who is peace Himself.
Let’s Talk About It
